MERCEDES-AMG GT BLACK SMASHES NÜRBURGRING LAP RECORD

Factory driver Engel describes record breaking street AMG GT Black as faster than his GT3 racer

Mercedes-AMG’s new GT Black Series has smashed the Nürburgring Nordschleife production car lap record. Factory GT3 race driver Mario Engel set an official street-legal sports car mark of 6 minutes 48.047 seconds on a lap including the T13 straight.

AMG BLACK 1.3 SECONDS QUICKER THAN OLD MARK

Engel’s time on the shorter lap without the 232-metre straight also beats the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ’s previous mark by 1.3 seconds.

No modifications were made to the GT Black Series. Its adjustable front splitter was however extended to Race and the spoiler blades to their middle position. The adjustable coilover suspension was lowered by 5mm at the front and 3mm at the rear. Camber angles were set maximum negative and the anti-roll bars at their hardest setting.

Record set using Black Tunability

The GT Black Series’ nine-stage traction control was adjusted between positions six and seven through the lap. A factory Track package was fitted with a roll cage. And the car ran on standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO rubber.

Engel describes the GT Black Series as ‘significantly faster’ than his GT3 racer. The record was broken on the same day as AMG’s recent GT 63 S 4-Door Coupé executive class record. So track temperatures were low and some parts of the track were ‘not yet totally dry’.
