Sarel’s WesBank quattro is immortalised by this Audi RS6-based GTO concept
Meet concept RS6 GTO — Audi’s way of opening celebrations around forty years of quattro all-wheel drive. A group of Audi apprentices developed the concept as part of a series of quattro 40th birthday events. It’s based on the 440kW biturbo V8 RS6. And styled in homage to the firm’s legendary quattro SA WesBank Modified and US IMSA GTO 2.2-litre five-cylinder racer.
GTO IMMORTALISES SUPERVAN’S QUATTRO
You may remember Sarel van der Merwe racing it here and Hans-Joachim Stuck in the US back in the day. But this one is a modern interpretation. The concept has enormous one-piece hubcaps and significant rear spoiler. And a livery that seems true to the epic original. Number 40 denotes the anniversary.
The restyled front end gets a look, GTO badging, a red splitter and new bonnet vents. There’s a sizeable side-exit exhaust and the gutted cabin gets a makeover. The trim makes way for a full roll cage, carbonfibre Recaro race seats and red six-point harnesses. Safety nets replace the front side windows. Just like grandpa.
Audi head of design Marc Lichte produced the final design off the students’ ideas. This one is likely to stay just a concept.
