PREVIEW: International Mach 1 expected to replace US-only Shelby GT350
Ford’s born again track-focused 350kW 570Nm V8 Mustang Mach 1 could be coming to South Africa. The Shelby GT350 replacement will bridge the gap between the standard Mustang and the Shelby GT500 in the US. It will also likely be sold worldwide.
MACH 1 IS A BACK TO THE FUTURE MUSTANG
The new Mach 1 calls back the ‘70s wide body fastback classic. It borrows a Shelby intake manifold and oil cooler for 20kW and 40Nm boost over the stock GT. Available with either a short-throw Shelby six-speed manual with a twin-disc clutch, or Ford’s 10-speed automatic gearboxes. It will chase the 4-second 0-100km/h barrier.
Manual cars can be specced with an optional Handling Package. That adds a larger front splitter, wheel spats and a Gurney tab on the boot lid. And wheel spats to accommodate even wider tyres.
Like its ‘70s grandpa, the new Mustang stands apart by a unique shark-nosed look ‘designed for optimum aerodynamic efficiency and bespoke five-spoke 19” alloys. Add a a retro-styled 3D grille with mock driving lights, new air intakes and an extended chassis tray for 22% better downforce than a Performance Packed Mustang GT.
