Benz back on top as Stuttgart’s feuding carmakers’ Nordschleife record war rambles on
Mercedes-AMG has smashed the prestigious limousine lap record at the Nürburgring and this time there’s no doubt about it. AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert yesterday returned Benz to the top of the pile as he blitzed the Nordschleife in 7 minutes 27.8 seconds aboard a GT 63 S 4Matic + four-door.
NO MORE QUESTIONS
Porsche claimed a 7 minute 29.8 second luxury-class record for new Panamera Turbo S around the Green Hell in September. But there was speculation as the official Nürburgring lap distance had changed since a similar AMG set the previous mark. There were questions about the Panamera claim.on the 200 meter shorter lap. Now Mercedes has put that Nordschleife limo lap record beyond doubt. But for how long?
RECORD CAR HAS 2021 MODEL GT 63 S 4-DOOR UPGRADES
The GT 63 S four door’s lap comes along with a few subtle spec changes to the 2021 model year. The sleek AMG limo gets revised drive and engine modes for an improved spread between comfort and sport, along with imporoved shock absorber control software and optimised chassis bearings and mountings. There’s novelty inside too, as latest generation ‘My Mercedes’ MBUX takes infotainment to a new level.
Foe the record, AMG engineers fitted a bucket seat a race harness for safety. Porsche installed a roll cage, but compensated for its 100 kg weight in the Panamera run.
