DTM – Sheldon comes from 14th to take first win at sodden Assen
South African Sheldon van der Linde took his maiden DTM German Touring Car victory for BMW at a sodden Assen in the Netherlands on Sunday. Van der Linde rose from 14th on the grid, making a perfectly timed pitstop, before the race was red flagged after an accident.
Sheldon took charge at the restart in treacherous wet conditions powerboats than race cars and controlled the five laps to take the flag ahead of the first live DTM crowd since lockdown to not only become the first South African to win in the DTM, after becoming the first to stand on the series podium just a few weeks ago.
“I am super super super happy,” a delighted Sheldon confirmed. “Someone was looking over me today and to come form P14 to the win was so special – the boys really deserve this. “Now I really can’t wait for the Nurburgring next week!
The result saw van der Linde up to sixth in the championship as the DTM approaches its midseason.
