TÄNAK WINS AS WRC RESUMES

WRC ESTONIA – Home hero survives late fright to win

Ott Tänak survived a late scare to deliver a popular home victory over Hyundai teammate Craig Breen at Estonia’s first-ever WRC rally on Sunday. The 600th WRC round since the championship began in 1973 marked the series’ return after a six-month pause through lockdown.

Tänak almost came unstuck in the penultimate stage when he hit a bank with the rear of his car, but he survived to climb to third in the championship, 13 points behind leader Sébastien Ogier as Hyundai close the manufacturers’ gap to leaders Toyota to five points.

Ogier ended third for Toyota, with teammates Elfyn Evans and Kalle Rovanperä fourth and fifth following tyre troubles, ahead of the Ford Fiestas of Teemu Suninen and Esapekka Lapp, while Oliver Solberg took WRC 2 in ninth.
