Toyota has revealed its next-generation LandCruiser Prado. Due for Japanese launch early in 2024, South African release is likely later next year. Dubbed the LandCruiser 250, the new-generation model is based on the TNGA-F platform which also underpins Lexus GX and LandCruiser 300 Series, as well as the Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, and next Hilux bakkies.

LandCruiser

LandCriuser Prado ‘makes the road’

LandCruiser basically made the fledgling Toyota Motor Co when first introduced in 1951. Said to be the car that makes the road anywhere from Africa, to Australia, Antarctica and Middle East where ‘only a camel or a Land Cruiser will get you across the dunes.’ Based on trust, Toyota promises ‘Cruiser will take you wherever you need to go. And bring you back.

The Core of LandCruiser and note that there is no longer a gap between Land and Cruiser,  Prado keeps that legend alive, with every aspect reassessed for a new generation. Sitting between the latest version of the classic 70 and 300, this new soul of Land Cruiser ‘transcends trends’ as it reflects diversity across all markets.

Prado

A broad petrol, hybrid & diesel Prado range

The new LandCruiser Prado will be available with a range of petrol and diesel powertrains depending on the market, including new hybrids for the first time. A 150 kW 500 Nm 48V mild-hybrid 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine is also significant in that it will arrive in certain new Hilux variants in the near future.

As expected, other powertrains will include the familiar 150 kW 500 Nm 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, a 120 kW 246 Nm 2.7-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol, a 207 kW 430 Nm 2.4-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder, and a 243 kW 630 Nm turbo 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid as per the new US Tacoma bakkie.

Prado

8-speed auto, full-time all-wheel drive

They turn an eight-speed automatic transmission with full-time four-wheel drive. A Prado first, electronic power steering reduces kickback while contributing to Prado being an intuitive vehicle to control. The new LandCruiser Prado will come in two different looks. A retro-round lit look, and more squared off upmarket models.

Beauty is function, says Toyota, and every aspect has a reason for being. The confidence inspiring Prado ‘looks the part. Boxy proportions are designed for ultimate manoeuvrability, best visibility, easy accurate driving on and off the road. And to be practical and easy to repair. Prado’s simplistic, easy to use and understand cabin features intuitive touch controls.

Prado

Prado now far more international

Now also a far more international model, LandCruiser Prado is going back to the USA for the first time in decades. Toyota promises that Prado will bring freedom in motion across the world. It is the car for a lifestyle, whatever the lifestyle… – Michele Lupini
