2026 rules ‘too risky’ as Formula 1 rethinks for 2027
The balance of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship has been cancelled on safety grounds. Andrea Kimi Antonelli is confirmed as 2026 FIA World Drivers Champion, Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 Constructors Champions.
The shock move comes following emergency simulations relating to the probability of a fatal accident in Formula 1. This is based on, and follows Oliver Bearman’s close shave at Sundays Japanese Grand Prix. Bearman crashed avoiding Franco Colapinto. His Alpine braked at its own accord, without any driver input. It is believed that in a similar scenario; a car could be sent into an uncontrollable flight. Or to an unsurvivable impact.
“It is with great regret that Formula 1 and the FIA are forced to cancel the balance of the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship,” FIA Safety Delegate Primo di Aprile announced at an emergency media conference in Paris last night. “A series of urgent simulations conducted since the Japanese Grand Prix have proven beyond doubt that the current F1 rules set unfortunately includes several dangerous and plausibly fatal nuances.

KIMI, MERCEDES TOP SHORTEST SEASON
“Not only is the repeat of, or indeed a far more serious version of the Bearman incident most plausible, but that extreme scenario of a car braking unexpectedly could very well also see cars chasing closely, launched beyond safety fences and into the crowd. Our simulations prove these scenarios likely to happen, no matter how the 2026 technical rules are altered going forward.
“It is therefore impossible to guarantee the safety of drivers, officials and fans. This leaves us with little option but to cancel the balance of the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship. As such, the current Championship leaders, Andrea Kimi Antonelli is declared 2026 World Drivers Champion. And Mercedes-AMG F1 Constructors Champions.
“We will not take any questions at this point. Formula 1 and the FIA are however already working tirelessly to develop a more compatible new rules set to see Formula 1 come back like never before. On behalf of the FIA, Formula 1 and all concerned, we express our sincere apologies to all our stakeholders, teams, drivers and fans through this unfortunate and unforeseen scenario.”
It is expected that the FIA and Formula 1 will urgently rubber stamp a new four-year dispensation for Formula 1. A popular scenario suggests a move back to 3.5 litre normally aspirated internal combustion engines of any configuration. But using zero-carbon e-fuels in 2026 specification chassis. There will no longer be any electric power unit components.
