Bolder GLS styling, tech updates tiptoe into showrooms
Mercedes-Benz has quietly introduced a significantly revised GLS class onto the South African market. Featuring bolder styling, enhanced luxury and seamless driver integration, the newcomer also gets updated drivetrain technology for unmatched refinement on the move.
Hot on the heels of the recent GLE facelift, Benz tells us that its flagship SUV now boasts a design to better befit its premier status. Big brother’s nip and tuck emphasises the formidable car’s presence even further, both on and off the road. Promising next level enhanced GLS comfort, connectivity, and ambience, as well as an enhanced engine line-up, the flagship Benz SUV aims to fully satisfy the more distinguished buyer.

A Revised Engine Line-up Under that GLS bonnet
Starting under the skin, our local range includes the effortless R 2.3-million 270 kW 750 Nm 2989 cc straight-six turbodiesel Benz GLS 450 d and the R 2.8-million 380 kW 730 Nm 3982 cc biturbo petrol V8 GLS 580 4Matics. Both get a 16 kW 200 Nm mild hybrid electric boost. The 450 d has a 6.1 second 0-100 km/h acceleration claim at 8.5 l/100 km. The 580 will do 100 in 4.9 seconds and glug 13.9 l/100 km of premium gas.
Topping the range. the monster luxury R 4.5-million Rolls-Royce Cullinan rivalling Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 has a 410 kW 770 Nm 3982 cc biturbo petrol V8. It’s good for 4.9 seconds to 100, 250 km/h, and 14 l/100 km. Other markets including the US do not get the 450 d, but rather the 280 kW 500 Nm 5.8 second 0-100 and 250 mph turbo petrol inline-six turbo petrol GLS 450.

All GLS Models Get a 16 kW 200 Nm Electric Boost
Already available in the US, and likely to reach our shores soon, the 4.1 second 0-100 14.5 l/100 450 kW 850 Nm AMG GLS 63 has a hand crafted biturbo 4-litre V8. All GLS models come with that same 16 kW 200 Nm electric boost Integrated Starter Generator. It nestles in the nose of their AMG Speedshift TCT 9-speed automatic transmissions. They also get Benz 4Matic all-wheel drive and are governed to 250 km/h mph maximum speed.
Straight up, you will tell the new GLS apart by their bolder and even more striking grilles. Add more prominent bumpers with integrated inlet grilles and larger faux under guards. Latest generation intelligent headlamps bring a now look via Triple-block LED DRLs, which theme is repeated at the rear. The now look is rounded off by a selection of new look light-alloy wheel designs and new Manufaktur paint finishes. A revised Off-Road Engineering package adds an underride guard and 30 mm more ground clearance.

All Models get the Old Maybach Trim
Step aboard the GLS to find new silver shadow galvanised air vents in the giant seven-seater cabin. With 500 to a large van-like 2,400 litre cargo capacity. That flowing glossy piano black Manufaktur trim that was only previously found in the Maybach flagship.
Latest generation ‘Hey Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment brings individual displays in traditional classic, red sporty, and essentials-only discreet styles. Add navi, assist, service, and an off-road mode. That adds gradient, inclination, compass and steering visuals and transparent bonnet and 360‑degree cameras.

Maybach GLS Redefines Opulence Inside
The AMG GLS 63 gets those expected brute looks, wheels, and quad tailpipes. The meticulously crafted Maybach GLS 600 is meanwhile identified by chrome grilles, lettered ‘Maybach’ branding. And sexy optional forged 23‑inch wheels. Maybach cabin highlights include opulent state-of-the-art luxury diamond quilt style first class seats and animated projection ambient lighting.
