JMC RETURNS. NEW VIGUS COMES APRIL

New Vigus

Caetano unleashes a high value JMC Assault

High value Chinese bakkie brand JMC has returned to South Africa under the auspices of the booming international Salvador Caetano group. Sales of its existing range commence immediately before the arrival of it all-new Vigus at the end of the first quarter of 2026.

JMC, or Jiangling Motors Corporation, not to be confused with more recent incumbent, rival bakkie maker JAC, or the Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group, is the centrepiece of Portuguese giant Salvador Caetano’s intensified South African focus. This comprehensive launch of its JMC range is strategically positioned to exploit value gaps in local pickup and light commercial segments.

Starting with the R299K Single Cab pickup (below), JMC plans to wrest a fair portion of its rivals’ dramatic more recent inflationary shift in this 3 000 unit a month niche to where workhorses today sit in the R450K bracket. The new 2.4-litre turbo petrol JMC Vigus with 5-speed manual transmission, 17-inch wheels, cruise control, ESP and a 5-year/100,000km warranty, now offers a well-specified entry point option far below the current niche price average.

Under R300K for a top JMC single cab

A similar story unfolds in the lucrative double cab segment. The average price of 4x2 DCs has grown from around R500K five years ago to well over R600K today. The 2-litre turbodiesel JMC Vigus Pro 4x2 8-speed Automatic. It also has a modern 9.7-inch infotainment and wireless CarPlay and Auto launches at R439K. The R499 4x4 DC Automatic adds a Borg Warner four-wheel-drive system, an Eaton rear differential lock and a host of premium features. Priced at a point you’d expect for a 4x2.

Targeting the commercial segment, JMC is also introducing three 2,8-litre 4J-series diesel powered Carrying light trucks. A customisable chassis starts at R300K, the ready to go dropside costs R399K and the box van R420K (below). The JMC Carrying emphasis is on total cost of ownership, reliability and an ergonomic cab design, ‘Heritage and legacy at an accessible price point’.

JMC also teased its smart upcoming All-New Vigus (top) at the launch. It hinting to its April arrival before a new Grand Avenue model will come in the second quarter. Add new medium truck variants in the third quarter and a ‘very special’ launch before the year’s end. This pipeline promises sustained market engagement and a growing portfolio.

JMC already has 29 dealers operational supporting its new South African product offensive in a rapidly developing network. The body will expand to the 40 dealers. Enough to support efficient sales and after-sales support nationwide by the end of 2026. Originally a Portuguese bus maker, the 80-year old family-owned R100-billion Caetano Group has more recently grown aggressively into a formidable international automotive conglomerate.

Caetano employs 9 000 people across 50 countries. Interests include JMC and GAC distribution in South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya and Senegal, the Tunisian Ford operation, Renault in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Also Nissan and MultiMoto motorcycle distribution in Portugal and the 170 dealer Irish Cedar Group. All alongside its longstanding bus and Toyota Land Cruiser pickup manufacturing and aerospace component supply operations to Airbus and Boeing.

Caetano’s JMC commercial vehicle line joins its growing list of local assets in a strategic South African market. To push through a rapidly diversifying brand portfolio designed to challenge the established players.

Great specification, unexpected JMC value

“Our aim is to grow and expand,” Salvador Caetano South Africa Managing Director Leslie Ramsoomar explains. “We operate on a grand scale and started with GAC here in South Africa. Now we add JMC and our footprint across all business areas continues to increase. This will necessitate more frequent engagement with the market.”

No longer just a European or an Iberian specialist the Caetano Group is a global automotive force. With a clear, data-driven strategy poised to disrupt key segments in South Africa. This JMC launch is not merely an introduction of new vehicles. It is a statement of intent from a seasoned player now firmly committed to the long-term South African automotive landscape.

The year ahead will test this ambition, but the foundation built on scale, strategy. And unequivocally based on sharp pricing. – Colin Windell
