IS BUGATTI PLOTTING A LE MANS RETURN?

Paul Ricard Bugatti test mule suggests a twist to Wednesday’s hypercar launch

Bugatti has not raced at Le Mans for 30 years. It hasn’t won that 24 Hour race so crucial to its history that a portion is named after it, for 70 years.

WHATEVER IT IS, THIS BUGATTI IS COMING WEDNESDAY

On Wednesday, the iconic brand at the centre of a possible sale from emissions-struck e-car refugee Volkswagen to Rimac, will launch a new hypercar. Some say it will be a new 1500kW electric car.

But hang on a second. What is this car in pictures Bugatti itself shared this week of a mysterious prototype mule testing at Paul Ricard in France?

Video clips indeed show the car circulating slow and silent, electric style. But others depict it rumbling quickly along to that signature sixteen-cylinder rumble. Which suggests it is a hybrid. As required by those new WEC hypercar rules.

Now with new Le Mans hypercar rules coming up in 2021, all this certainly leaves one to ponder. Which is precisely what we’ll leave you to do!
