F1 – ITALIAN GRAND PRIX REPORT – Gasly’s shock win after Leclerc red flag throws the bones
The Italian Grand Prix went completely against form when Frenchman Pierre Gasly scored a shock maiden F1 win for Alpha Tauri Honda over Carlos Sainz’ McLaren Renault and Lance Stroll’s Racing Point Mercedes this afternoon.
The race was turned on its head after Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari slammed into the tyre wall to bring out the safety car, which prompted runaway leader Lewis Hamilton to pit,. But the pit lane was closed and Hamilton earned a 10-second stop-go penalty.
That left Gasly leading Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari before Sainz put on a charge to chase Gasly down to his best ever result in second.
